All relationships whether romantic, platonic, or familial have something to teach us. They provide us with the opportunity for growth and self-discovery. There are many ways in which relationships can be toxic. You may express yourself or treat your partner in a way that you are accustomed to from childhood conditioning. It’s the way your parents treated you, how they treated each other, and perhaps how they were treated by their parents. You may not agree with your partner when they voice their opinions because you grew up enduring the same treatment. In your mind you’re showing love so you fight to defend what you know.

Sometimes your partners aren’t doing anything negative or hurtful, but you’re responding as if they are. Take for example your partner starts to spend a lot of time with you, showering you in loving gestures and affection. You may know mentally that it comes from love, yet you still feel angry. You may feel like you’re suffocating and being trapped by this person. This feeling becomes so intense that you lash out because it’s the only way you see fit to save yourself.
